Thought While Watching Really Bad TV (aka Charmed)
Today I watched the third episode of this season’s Charmed, mostly because Andreas told me that episode four actually is kind of good and I’m a little bit behind anyway. You really don’t need a reason for watching Charmed. Or you do, but they can only be lame, so it really doesn’t matter, how lame they are.
Inniway, they opened with this looooooooong montage of San Francisco shots (I think it was even longer) and that got me thinking about the why for god’s sake do they do that? They’re really just montages. There’s nothing in it which is just remotely related to the following episode’s plot, other than that Charmed takes place in San Francisco which it does nearly every fucking episode. And they’re long. And – might I say – pretty boring when you’ve seen it for the 159th time. Exactly.
So, why the hell do they do that? I came up with two explanations and I like them both, so I thought I’d share.
Explanation One: They somehow get money from the San Francisco board of tourism or something like that. I think this only could work if not a single member of the board has actually seen the show, but it would explain the looooooooooong montages with the pretty sunsets and the pretty Golden Gate Bridge and the cute little harbor shots.
Explanation Two: Brad Kern realized that his show sucks profoundly. The show has hit the bottom with a crash, but since that isn’t enough it’s now scraping and digging at the bottom to find a way into the basement of complete suckiness. So he just tries to avoid as much actual dialogue and plot time as possible. Thinking about it, I like the montages a lot, because it all goes downhill from there.
Any other ideas? Or are you smarter than me and don’t watch? Please lie to me.
